About Gandhi Oriental Foods – The Roots of the Business
Rewind to the late 1950’s and a young man by the name of Amritlal Mody (original surname Gandhi, but that’s a story for another day!) had taken the bold decision to leave his small Indian village and start a new life in England. He and his young family worked relentlessly in everything from crisp factories to cornershops until they eventually saved enough money to start their own business.
Living amongst the growing first generation Indian immigrant community in East London, they decided to open a small grocery shop in the area catering to their specialist food needs. Word spread quickly of this wonderful emporium of spices and exotic ingredients and thus was born ‘Gandhi Oriental Foods’. Indian families would travel from all over London to stock up on the flavours of ‘back-home’ and before long, the business was also supplying much of the UK’s burgeoning Indian restaurant scene with their specialist ingredients.
Fast forward to 2015, and Gandhi Oriental Foods has established itself as the UK’s leading spice merchant. Still based in East London, the small grocery store has grown to supply some of the UK’s most prestigious restaurants. Third-generation family member, Pritesh Mody, has launched World of Zing to evolve the business with an array of rare and exciting ingredients relevant to the new generation of adventurous foodie.
