Cue fest announces the date for the 2014 festival. (Saturday 14 th June 2014) Due to the success of The Great British Cucumber Festival 2012, which was held on National Cucumber Day to celebrate the Lea Valley cucumber to raise awareness of our local salad industry, to raise funds for local charities and to give everyone a great day out!
There will be live music and dance, children’s arts & crafts and hands on activities, local clubs and business stands, sports and leisure, health and beauty, the famous cucumber relay race and of course lots of food – not just cucumbers!
The Great British Cucumber Festival Committee was formed following a discussion between Waltham Abbey Town Partnership and Abbey View Produce on how to raise awareness of the importance and national significance of the Lea Valley salad industry. The enthusiastic response from the growers resulted in the idea of a food festival becoming a reality. National Cucumber Day was registered and the first ever Great British Cucumber Festival was held in September 2011.
The first festival was such a success that is now set to be a bi-annual food festival and family fun day and has become a highlight in the Waltham Abbey Loves Food initiative programme of events.
Did you know that Lea Valley produces 75% of all UK cucumbers? 1.2 million cucumbers leave the distribution centres every week and Lea Valley growers make a substantial contribution to the pepper and tomato supplies too. It is certainly a “growing” industry that should be celebrated and supported – so remember to buy local!
