Funnybones Foodservice; the leading importer and supplier of all things ‘Tex-Mex’ and ‘American Diner’, recently invited us to visit their food service headquarters in Welwyn Garden City. With our Sombrero’s on, shouting “Andale! ¡Andale! Arriba! ¡Arriba! Yii-hah!” we Speedy Gonzales’d over to find out more..
During the mid 1980’s, the owners of a London based American-style restaurant decided to launch a new product called Baby Back Ribs. A hugely popular item on menus in the USA, the ribs soon proved to be a big hit in London too.
As demand grew and new rib variants were launched, the owners began to give serious thought to the idea of creating an authentic Mexican and American food service business aimed at restaurants and caterers. The result was Funnybones Foodservice (the name comes from the fact that restaurant-goers would refer to the Baby Back Ribs as ‘those funny little bones’) and success was quick to follow.
Although Funnybones is now part of global giant – Grace Kennedy Group, we found that they hadn’t lost their personal touch or sense of humour as you can sometimes find in large corporations. Funnybones emphasis is on importing and manufacturing totally authentic and innovative quality products with four key values: Passion, Taste, Innovation & Service, all of which were witnessed in abundance on our visit.

During our visit, we did the usual factory tour etc etc.. But then it was Lunchtime! Oh Boy! I lost count of how many street food inspired dishes we ate that day, it was definitely more than twenty, maybe even thirty! We did get through it though and I have to say, I was very pleasantly surprised, must admit, my expectations were far far exceeded in terms of quality, taste, authenticity and all round flavour. It wasn’t just the food that was amazing, Funnybones have a huge range of totally authentic accompaniments to complement this huge feast we were having, Funnybones head development chef Tom was on hand all day and just kept feeding us with fabulous food. Tom’s knowledge and vast experience kept us all well entertained that day, but when Tom isn’t entertaining guests, you will always find him willing to give menu advice, food ideas and expert hints and tips, even demonstrations for that matter, at Funnybones HQ development kitchen.
Being street food traders ourselves, having visited and tested out a huge range of products from Funnybones, I would have no hesitation in highly recommending them, they have probably the largest and most authentic array of superior quality products and ingredients available anywhere in the UK.
