The Soil Association has launched the new BOOM Awards (Best of Organic Market) celebrating great taste, exceptional quality, innovation and creativity in organic products and places to eat. Anna Jones, celebrity chef, cookery writer and a graduate of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Foundation, is this year’s celebrity ambassador. The awards opened for entries on Tuesday 5th January 2016.
The BOOM awards celebrate the best innovative and great tasting organic products. They’re judged by an independent panel of well-known experts in good food and the awards also include categories for the huge range of places organic food is available – from street food and restaurants to caterers. There will also be a consumer choice award open for nominations from the public. All organic food and drink businesses are encouraged to enter the awards.
Clare McDermott, business development director of Soil Association Certification said;
“We’re really excited to launch our new BOOM Awards – we’re going to make some noise for the very best in organic and raise the profile of new and existing organic businesses. With over 1,000 new products licensed with Soil Association Certification in 2015 we know that there is fantastic innovation going on in the organic sector. Coupled with a panel of expert judges and the amazing Anna Jones, this year’s BOOM Awards are naturally worth shouting about!”
Growth in the organic market is coming from millennials new consumers who value innovation, creativity and craftsmanship in food production and presentation. With a creative new look, format and categories, the new awards reflect these trends. They now have a more urban and contemporary feel and will really highlight the innovation happening in organic food.
The awards will also recognise and reward the great variety of places and caterers now serving organic. Ranging from canteens to restaurants, the growth of organic in the catering sector grew by 13.6% in 2014 and within the Soil Associations’ Catering Mark scheme there is now over £7 million worth of organic food served in the UK annually (according to the Soil Association Organic Market Report).
Anyone in the organic industry or who has organic as part of their business can enter and there is a discount available for Soil Association Certification licensees who apply. The Awards will provide a platform for all businesses looking to profile their organic ranges as well as an opportunity to see who’s who in organic. Judging takes place in March in a central London location and already several high-profile judges have signed up to take part including chef’s, writers and retailers.
