Hortense is a 1975 Citroen HY Van (1.9 petrol). She was sourced from the South of France in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. She started life as a pickup and was then converted to a horse box. When we bought her, she was just a shell.
We had her extended to the rear and also had her raised to enable me to stand in her when working….I am 6ft 3!! About 18 months ago she went through a full restoration and mechanical overhaul, all undertaken by a small company in the south of France (Madame H). This also included a full re-spray, replacement of rusted panels and the re-upholstery of the cab seats and engine cover. A full length serving hatch was also fabricated as was an access door behind the oven.
The interior layout was designed by myself with help from Jay over at Dingley Dell. The internal fit out was completed by a company called Bingham Trailers in Nottinghamshire and they have done an excellent job. The oven is the Bushman medium commercial oven which has not been used a great deal, other than a few street and personal parties. The van is run every couple of weeks to keep the engine and brakes in motion and the van is kept in a secure barn when not is use
Hortense is fitted with everything you would expect, combi boiler, twin sinks, fridge, dough storage area with eutectic plate cooling and a working dough tray drawer. There is also a fair amount of storage space under the counter and behind the oven. I have two sunken gastro trays in the worktop and racking for many more above.
There is a false ceiling with both spot and tile effect lighting. The wall covering is heavy duty karn dean vinyl floor tiles and the worktop is a combination of ‘potted’ stainless steel in the work areas and oak at the serving hatch. There are 4 double sockets, one above the dough tray storage (for a dough roller), two behind the fridge and one under the sink for the combi boiler and pump.
